Building a Bridge Between the Amazon and Mongolia

Tierra Selva Presents:

There are moments in conservation work when something quietly extraordinary begins to take shape—not in the forest, but far beyond it.

In March 2024, Tierra Selva embarked on an ambitious and deeply meaningful initiative: bringing the voices, images, and spirit of Peru’s Amazon to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The result would become “Reflections of the Rainforest: Art and Advocacy from Peru’s Amazon”—the first exhibit of its kind in Mongolia.

The preparation was both logistical and emotional.

Paintings from Amazonian artists in Lamas, Tarapoto, and Pucallpa were carefully selected—each one carrying stories of biodiversity, ancestral knowledge, and environmental change. Alongside them, a photographic series by Rena Guenduez (Tierra Selva Board Member) documented lived realities in the rainforest: its beauty, fragility, and resilience.

This was not simply an art shipment—it was the movement of perspectives.

The curatorial collaboration between Tierra Selva and Mongolian partners, including Sunderiya Erdenesaikhan and Gantugs Baatar, required thoughtful dialogue. How do you translate the Amazon—not just visually, but spiritually—to an audience with little prior exposure to it?

Every detail mattered:

  • The narrative flow of the exhibit
  • The balance between beauty and urgency
  • The inclusion of youth and regional voices
  • The framing of climate change as both global and deeply local

At its core, the set-up became something more than preparation. It was a meeting of worlds—Amazonian and Mongolian—linked through shared concerns for land, identity, and survival.

Thank you to Norphei Gallery for supporting this important Initiative. A special thanks to Sunderiya Erdenesaikhan and Gantugs Baatar for their hard work.
