Our organization was formed in 2008 out of a genuine concern for people, culture, environment, and local livelihoods. Launched in the heartland of Peru’s amazon; tierraselva recognizes the ongoing threats of global climate change, big business, and illegal trafficking in what is now the planet’s last frontier for future survival.
Actively engaged with local communities throughout the region of San Martin, Peru, tierraselva has worked on conservation issues introducing transformative and behavioural change mechanisms through capacity building for individuals, communities and stakeholders at large. One person at a time – one community at a time – one step at a time. For the well-being of future generations.
Recognizing that change happens in incremental steps and that mainstream development approaches are not always the best solution for greater impact and increased beneficiaries; our organization emphasizes the importance of local heritage as a combative solution to modern day threats and impacts. There is no shortage of these as the region faces ongoing issues such as, population influx impacting land rights, use and access, drug cartels, construction, agro-pharma industries, illegal timber trade, mining, oil and gas operations as well as poor local waste and water management practices. Many of these have long sustaining impacts on individuals and communities affecting livelihoods and socio-cultural fabrics eventually leading to natural and socio-cultural bankruptcy.
Joining forces with the international Waterkeepers Alliance, tierraselva has been playing an active role in water protection along the Huallaga River, one of the Amazon’s main tributaries. Over the years we have been actively engaged in; water patrols, awareness campaigns, engaging youth, and women as well as traditional and non-traditional leaders in transforming the threats against their natural and cultural environment into preservation efforts and opportunities.
Our organization works in constant dialogue with individuals, communities, governments, institutions, and organizations who seek a clearer understanding of what development means; its benefits, detriments, and the means in which current impacts can be managed, mitigated and monitored for present and future generations. Our mission is to provide communities with the skills, tools and timely information that can improve transparency and good governance (local to national), facilitate dialogue, partnerships and mitigate differences and conflicts and importantly permit value driven decision-making.
