waterkeeper® alliance

Tierra Selva is an active member of the WATERKEEPER® Alliance which is an international advocacy group dedicated to the preservation and protection of waterways and water bodies. There are some 200 Waterkeeper organizations throughout the world protecting lakes, rivers, bays and streams. We are the official Central Huallaga RIVERKEEPER® raising awareness and advocating alongside communities impacted by threats along the water system and its watersheds.

Tierraselva has been working with the Waterkeepers Alliance since 2009. Our work has focused on clean and safe water advocacy, water resource management and community affected water issues as a result of climate change. The Huallaga is a valuable resource that is vital to the sustainability of communities that share its pathway through winding forests and farmland . It is a vital organ for the delicate biodiversity of our region and plays an important role in the health and welfare of the mighty Amazon river.

Rivers are the driving force of all things natural, protecting this valuable asset is critical to the regions sustainability

As the Central Huallaga RIVERKEEPER® we protect some 100 kilometres of river, working with over 15 key communities that lie within the provinces of; Mariscal Caceres, Huallaga, Bellavista, Picota, and the district of Shapaja all within the province of San Martin.  The Huallaga River is a tributary of the Marañón River, part of the Amazon Basin. Old names for this river include Guallaga and Rio de los Motilones. The Huallaga is born on the slopes of the Andes in central Peru and joins the Marañón before the latter reaches the Ucayali River to form the Amazon. Its main affluents are the Monzón, Mayo, Biabo, Abiseo and Tocache rivers.
